​SITUATION

  • A medical technology business that develops, manufactures, and sells personalized treatment solutions was unable to achieve profitability  in spite of its technologically superior product portfolio

  • The new VP of R&D asked for help assessing their product development system to identify concrete steps to improve pipeline delivery performance and refine the product development operating model including:

    • Governance & Decision-making

    • Execution Teams

    • Operating Processes

    • Tools & Systems

    • Metrics

    • Rewards/incentives

ACTION

  • Conduct an assessment of the as-is operating model (organization design, governance and decision making models, product development process, technology systems,  financial model) using a combination of interviews, workshops, data analysis, and inputs from leading industry practices.

  • Identify near-term and longer-term improvements opportunities and prioritize/plan the detailed activities for implementing themin subsequent phases

  •  Gain alignment across all relevant functions around changes needed to deliver on product pipeline commitments​

RESULTS

  • Assessment was well received by Executive Leadership Team – Engagement continued for an additional 1.5 years focusing on focusing on implementation of recommendations

  • Client delivered its first new platform project to market and launched a country-specific product line extension within 9 months of implementing recommendations

  • Client achieved its first year of net profitability after 18 months
